Pawling has the highest real estate taxes of any comparable town in Dutchess

County or any town adjacent to ours.  Over the past 15 years taxes in this terrific

small town have risen so fast and so high that our real estate market has been devastated.

Every decision to add expenses or repeat the wasteful spending of previous years comes at a price.  Not only has your tax bill gone up, a very serious situation has developed in our real estate market here in Pawling.  New buyers do research, they listen to what the realtors in other towns tell them, talk to their friends who live in this area, etc.  Our reputation for the highest taxes in Dutchess County precedes us - it is well know throughout the Hudson Valley and that has stopped new buyers from even considering Pawling.

 

But, it wasn't always that way.  Just 15 years ago our taxes and local government spending were much closer in line with the rest of the area and our town was much more attractive to home buyers.  Our taxes have increased a whopping 160% in those 15 years.  We have a fabulous and rich history, the nicest people you could meet, an adorable village with a farmers market on Saturday that is the envy of every town around,  beautiful landscapes, delicious restaurants and a rock star venue to boot!

 

Why would such a beautiful and interesting place be such a turn off to new buyers?  The answer is simple - TAXES.  We must do something about it and we must do it quickly.  Let's communicate with our town, village and school leaders and emphasize the urgency.  Many people are currently in serious situations where they must leave their homes for a variety of reasons....taxes just being one of them.  For these people, many of whom are beyond retirement age, the situation is a crisis.  With few or no new buyers coming to Pawling our real estate values will only stagnate further.

 

Let's work together over the next weeks and months to turn our situation around.  Let's get the real estate market back on its feet so this town will be attractive to young families and our local businesses can thrive again.  Then Pawling home owners can feel their home is not a liability that could destroy their future - but instead a good investment for a future in the town they love.
